Quoting michael_080

I have the good fortune of living in the Southern U.S. People are friendly and its completely acceptable to speak to strangers. When I encounter someone I don't know. I feel that my encouragement to them might be a smile and a sincere word or a show of appreciation. Perhaps it is something that they are wearing. I just try to make eye contact and convey to them, "Someone cares." I've never had anyone to turn away from me when I was trying to be nice or say something nice. I think, more than anything else, it is the vibe that you put off to others. I truly do care about people and I think that when I approach them, they feel it.

I think thats lovely. We , all of us are not friendly enough to others.

Generally I would say that Americans are far more open and gregarious than Englishmen. We tend not to involve ourselves with strangers which in turn makes us look like we dont care. That is not the case but generally we are private people. Maybe its something to do with living on a smallish island or living too closely together Im not sure. What I do know is that as a nation we are not known for being demonstrative to strangers. Perhaps thats why you call us stiff assed Brits.......Having said that , it is well known that if an Englishman or woman makes a friend of you. it will be for life and through thick and thin.

I know I digress a little here  but I do believe that different cultures , even though we speak the same language are just that. Different.

Maybe we should all take a leaf from your book.

very noble Michael, and I take my hat off to you. Do you think strangers need encouraging? Is this something you try to do with everybody or rather those you feel a little lacking?

I can understand encouraging those you know and love and even those in your not immediate acquaintance but  this encouraging it seems goes go to those whom you do not know.  How do you tackle that, and what happens if they feel they do not want your encouragement?

? What say you    ? Some might say is it encouragement or is it  fulfilling a need in you?

By the way I allways enjoy reading your blogs !
